      About the Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Welcome

For hundreds of thousands of people in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, it's not morning without their P-I.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is the largest morning newspaper in the state of Washington and has a following throughout the Northwest. It has been "The Voice of the Northwest since 1863," as it proudly proclaims on its front page. Atop the P-I's office building on the Elliott Bay waterfront, with its views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, sits a beloved Seattle landmark: a huge steel, neon-lit globe bearing the slogan "It's in the P-I." Look for the globe in one form or another on every page of this Web site.

The heart of the Seattle P-I is the 170 staffers dedicated to providing both an independent editorial voice for the Seattle area and fiercely competitive, highly professional coverage of local, national and regional news, public affairs, sports, the arts and popular culture.

The P-I's press, pre-press, advertising, circulation and marketing functions have been handled since 1983 by The Seattle Times Co., acting as the Seattle Newspaper Agency, in a Joint Operating Agreement under the provisions of the federal Newspaper Preservation Act.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper is part of The Hearst Corp., one of the world's larger diversified communications companies, with interests in newspaper, magazine, book and business publishing; television and radio broadcasting; cable network programming; newspaper features distribution; television production and distribution; and new media activities.

Hearst Magazines is the largest publisher of monthly magazines in the world with 16 leading consumer magazines in the U.S. and more than 60 international editions. Circulation of Hearst's 12 daily newspapers makes it the 11th largest daily publisher in the U.S., sixth largest on Sunday. Hearst owns six TV stations and six radio stations. Hearst-owned King Features group is the world's largest distributor of newspaper comics and text features. Cable interests include partial ownership of Lifetime, A&E;, History Channel, ESPN, ESPN2 and New England Cable News. Avon Books and William Morrow & Co. are part of Hearst as are 14 other book imprints. In New Media, Hearst, while developing several large Web sites, has ownership interests in Netscape and Books That Work CD-ROMs and is a charter member of the New Century Network.
